Greening the City
Aldgate intervention
A light-hearted competition entry for a new landmark at Aldgate. Our approach was to design an elevated garden offering an oasis of calm in a dense urban environment, currently short on amenity space.
The structure took the form of the traffic island in plan and was sculpted to form a striking landmark, marking an historic entrance to the City and the approach route to Stratford for the 2012 games.
By raising the garden above the pavement, pedestrians could navigate the junction uninterrupted and could enjoy a degree of separation from the chaotic traffic flows below. There are several areas in the City where this approach could work, providing much needed amenity, biodiversity and urban heat sinks.
