UK Antarctic Heritage Trust

Since 2016 we have been working with the Trust to conserve and maintain six sites in Antarctica that are protected under the Antarctic Heritage Treaty.

Base Y on Horseshoe Island was built in 1955. The huts were pre-fabricated, shipped out and erected by the team of scientists and geologists posted to set up weather stations in strategic locations in Antarctica. We provided a scope of work for a specialist expedition team to carry out emergency repairs and to gather site information and establish the condition of the huts and their contents, to enable the scope and specification to be drawn up for their conservation.

The Conservation Management Plan is based on research from original drawings and reports at the British Antarctic Survey archive in Cambridge. We worked with the BRE to scope the sampling of materials to assess their deterioration in the harsh climate, with Crick Smith and the University of Lincoln to scope the sampling for paint analysis, and with artefact conservators to advise on the conservation of the artefacts.
