Bletchley Park, visitor centre

Block C was constructed as a computer hall but stood derelict since 1986 and had been overlooked as it had been so heavily adapted post-war that it was unlisted, however since the work was completed it has been listed.

We proposed Block C as the Visitor Centre, as it stands at the entrance to the site and it was well-suited to change of use, as its "spider block" form was open-plan, with a central day-lit spine suitable for circulation and perimeter spurs suitable for exhibitions, a cafe, shop, toilets, offices and plant rooms.

The wartime service entrance was re-opened as a main entrance. New doors, steps, ramps, services, toilets and exhibition fittings were designed to complement the style of the wartime building, allowing visitors to step back in time as they enter the building. The original floor, Crittall windows and fittings were refurbished but some 100 post-war brick partitions were removed.
